#1 reason to get healthy

The Christian view of health and fitness
Losing weight and getting healthy
Honor God with your body
It’s about stewardship

Here’s a quick answer about our physical bodies.

Think about the number one obsession about our bodies.  It’s about losing weight and getting healthy!

But for believers, it’s not as simple as jumping on the fitness bandwagon that the world wants to ride.  It’s actually much more than that as it involves a spiritual understanding of why we should take our physical health seriously.

And I also want to invite those who are not inspired to consider the importance of taking care of yourself.

So, the number one reason everyone wants to get fit and healthy is to look good and feel good.  But for the Christian, there is a different reason that should become the number one reason.

A Temple
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.” (see also 1 Cor. 3:16)

This imagery of a temple is supposed to be immediately understood, because most people will look at a temple and immediately see that it is something special and sacred.  In fact, it’s special and sacred, because it is the very house of God.

Now others might see the body as just a physical package with bones, organs, and blood.  But to the Christian, it’s more than that.  It’s actually a sacred dwelling place of God Himself.

Furthermore, God resides in there, because He has purchased that house by the redeeming work of His son, Jesus.  In fact, there is a greater purpose for redeeming that house.  That greater purpose is to honor God with your body.

Honor God with your body
Well, how do you honor God with your body?  That’s the question of the day!  To start with, honoring God with your bodies begins with a proper attitude of stewardship.  For, if your body is a sacred temple, then you are the custodian, given a sacred task of stewardship and maintenance.  And this upkeep has the higher goal of honoring God as you do it.

This is the Christian view of your health and fitness.  And if you understand this and take it to heart, you need to take care of your body with good food and exercise so that God is glorified and honored through our bodies.
